Central Florida has worked hard to become a leading sustainable destination and a new report recently commissioned by Green Destination Orlando (GDO) showcases Central Florida's commitment to being a sustainable tourism destination and how Orlando's Unique sustainability programs are shaping the future for travelers. GDO, the City of Orlando and Orange County have wide-scale sustainability initiatives in place to keep the region moving in the right direction.

Orlando Takes the Lead in Sustainability

As the top U.S. destination for visitors, it’s only right that Orlando lead the way in an ever-greener economy. It makes business sense, plus it’s the right thing to do. That’s why we offer many sustainable options for meeting in Orlando — venues, accommodations, dining and entertainment.

Aspiring to Be Green

Through collaboration with the local chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and select area hotels and attractions, Visit Orlando has been integral in establishing Green Destination Orlando – a pilot program that will set sustainability standards for destinations throughout the world, guiding them down the path toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification.

Green efforts at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), Central Florida hotels and resorts and other meeting venues help planners and suppliers produce events in a more sustainable manner. The Amway Center in downtown Orlando is the first NBA facility to earn gold LEED certification, and the OCCC is the largest convention center in the world to have received its LEED certification. In addition, the Greater Orlando area has 136 Florida Green Lodging designated properties out of a total of 689 in the entire state.

Solar-Powered Meetings

The Orange County Convention Center was the first facility of its kind to be ISO 14001:2004-certified for its recycling program and the third convention center in the world to be certified with a new international sustainability standard (iAPEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standards for Venues). However, the center’s greatest innovation recycles one of Orlando’s most prized assets — the sun. The Center’s one-megawatt rooftop photovoltaic system generates power by collecting solar energy and provides 12 percent of the venue’s annual electrical needs.

It’s Electric

Orlando is also the pilot city for an innovative new program – Drive Electric Orlando where Orlando’s leading rental car agencies, hotels, and tourist attractions offer vacationers and business travelers an exciting and convenient opportunity to enjoy an electric car during their visit. There are also nearly 300 ChargePoint stations for electric vehicles in Orlando, with convenient locations at convention hotels and other spots along the International Drive corridor.
